William was the father of Jeffrey Cole.
Before Season 2[]
William and Mary Kate had a son. After their divorce, Jeffrey went to live with his mother in Venice, where he attended school. William noticed Jeffrey had been depressed after the divorce, but he thought it was normal. At some point, William asked Jeffrey to stay with him in Farmington for a year and his mother reluctantly agreed.
Season 2[]
One night, William went to work. When he arrived late at night, he didn't want to wake up Jeffrey, so he didn't check his room. The next morning, he realized Jeffrey had disappeared. He then called Mary Kate and she came over to his house. After they called the police, Officers Paul Jackson and Ray Carlson took their initial statement and contacted Detectives Claudette Wyms and Dutch Wagenbach. When they arrived, William and Mary Kate told them what had happened. As they talked to them, William kept on blaming himself for Jeffrey's disappearance. The detectives asked them for a recent picture of Jeffrey and they gave it to him.
