Synopsis[]
The rivalry between the Strike Team and the Decoy Squad heats up as they compete to find a murder suspect.
Plot[]
As the Barn celebrates Shane Vendrell's engagement and pregnancy announcement, he tells Vic Mackey that he wants him at the wedding no matter what. Claudette Wyms and Dutch Wagenbach arrive at a hospital (where they encounter Corrine Mackey working as a nurse) to interview Robert, a man poisoned with thallium. As Dutch learns that his brother Kevin dropped by multiple times that day and had breakfast with him, Claudette is called away by David Aceveda.
Tavon Garris tells Vic that he plans to transfer off the Strike Team because of tensions with Shane and his desire to be Vic's right hand, though Vic promises he has "plans" for him. Vic is called to the scene of a triple homicide, where a pawn shop was robbed, the owner and his son were killed, and homeless advocate Karen Rivas was killed for her car by the robber. Claudette orders both the Strike Team and Decoy Squad to investigate, and Walon Burke bets them that whichever team finds the killer first, the losers have to run naked through the Barn, which Vic accepts.
Claudette assigns the Strike Team to find Rivas's car and the Decoy Squad to canvass witnesses. Tavon volunteers to search a nearby fence for the store's goods and Vic sends Shane with him. Vic wonders if Rivas's car will be sold for scrap, while a witness tells reporters that she saw a white man and black woman flee the scene together. As Vic and Curtis Lemansky go to Edixon, the owner of a local auto store, Lem gets a call from Ronnie Gardocki, who informs them that the Decoy Squad brought in another witness. Vic worries that Aceveda is seeing if they can replace the Strike Team. He finds Edixon's illegal chop shop and orders him to put out an offer to buy Rivas's car.
Tavon takes Shane to his fence informant "Meaty", where Shane finds several guns with the serial numbers filed off. He arrests Meaty against Tavon's protests. At the Barn, Vic informs Claudette that Ronnie checked the stolen items and found they were all jewelry pawned by felon "Dean Warrison", who the witness says could be the robber. Vic learns that Rivas's credit card was used at a gas station and Burke is talking to the owner. Dutch interviews Kevin, noting that this is the third time Robert has been hospitalized. He further notes that Robert is successful while Kevin is financially struggling and his insurance beneficiary. Dutch gets aggressive, causing Kevin to become resistant.
Ronnie informs Vic that he talked to a friend of Warrison's, who said he recently moved in with a black woman. Vic notices Burke passing Warrison's mugshot to Trish George to distribute. Aceveda brings Carlos Izturis to Claudette, as he plans to write a piece about the case. Aceveda is informed he has a call from Tom Bankston, which he waives so he can help Izturis. Claudette confronts him and he insists that Rivas's death will reflect poorly on their station without proper coverage. As Shane brings in Meaty, Tavon complains to Vic and argues with Shane. Vic stops them and orders Meaty let go. Dutch asks Claudette for help with Kevin, but she encourages him to give it another go. Danny Sofer and her new partner Lucas are called by Randall to Julien Lowe's house over a domestic dispute with Vanessa. Danny talks to her and learns Julien needed back surgery after his beating, and may need another, prompting their argument.
As the Decoy Squad finds Rivas's car at a motel, Vic gives Claudette the name of the female robber, Danielle Riggs. Claudette offers to help with Tavon and Shane, but Vic insists he can handle it. As the Strike Team searches Riggs's empty apartment, their neighbor informs Vic that she left with "the white boy" that morning. Dutch again sits down with Kevin and takes a calmer tone, noting that Robert had lent him a total of $14,000 over the years. He again aggravates Kevin. Aceveda confronts Danny on not putting Julien's dispute in her report, but she insists it was not of consequence. Aceveda asks if, combined with the complaint against Julien for excessive force, this will be an issue, but she insists he will be fine. The Decoy Squad brings in Warrison, having found him at a rehab clinic.
In interrogation with Claudette, Warrison insists that his friend and Riggs's boyfriend "Crazyhouse" was the robber. He explains that he needed money so he pawned Riggs's jewelry, given to her by Crazyhouse, and was forced to drive them to the store so they could take it back. Vic is called to Edixon, who has Deena Klein, now working for a broker, attempting to sell him Rivas's car. As Vic brings her in, Danny confronts him on encouraging Julien to attack Ray Carlson.
Deena claims to have not talked to Crazyhouse and offers the location of the car in exchange for reward money and her and her boss going free. As Vic advises Aceveda to let her go free and then let Vic tail her, Dutch complains to Claudette that he is still having trouble with Kevin. He asks Claudette to reprimand him in front of Kevin and plays friendly. As Vic and Shane tail Deena, Shane asks for Tavon to be removed, but Vic insists they need him so they can keep an outside source on the money train. They detain Deena and her boss Bill when they go to pick up one of their cars, and Bill explains that Crazyhouse sold them Rivas's car. As the Strike Team sends them to meet with Crazyhouse, Vic gets a call from Corrine, who informs him that Cassidy Mackey is missing. Vic arrives at their home and acts aggressively towards Owen Thigpen before leaving with Corrine. Danny asks Julien about his increased aggression and attack on Carlson, but he brushes her off.
As the rest of the Strike Team watch Bill and Deena meet up with Riggs and Crazyhouse, he realizes what is going on and takes Riggs hostage. Lem gets the drop on him, and he and Riggs are arrested. As they drive through the neighborhood, Vic and Corrine argue about her taking overtime at the hospital and being absent when Cassidy left. Dutch gives Claudette a fake report that claims thallium was found in Kevin's kitchen. Kevin asks what happens next, and Claudette claims Dutch gets the credit for bringing him in, going as far as to invite Izturis to write a story on it. Believing he has no way out and wanting Claudette to win over Dutch, he confesses to poisoning Robert to get out of debt.
Vic and Corrine find Cassidy in a park, who is initially stubborn until Vic speaks forcefully to her. Aceveda reassigns Danny and Julien as partners. Vic returns to find the Strike Team with a detained Crazyhouse, and they victoriously bring him back to the Barn. Vic asks Tavon to resolve things with Shane, claiming he is acting out because of Tavon's competence. Julien is unable to perform sexually with Vanessa as they try for their own child, though he blames it on his back problems. Dutch thanks Claudette for her help with Kevin and teases her about her success.
Shane arrives home to find Tavon talking with Mara Sewell. She leaves them alone and they agree to respect each other's positions within the Strike Team. When Shane makes a comment about Tavon "knowing your place," they argue about their favor with Vic. When Shane calls Tavon a slur, they fight and Tavon gets the upper hand. Mara returns and hits him in the head with an iron. He staggers out as Shane weakly tries to follow him, but is held back by Mara. As Tavon drives off, he passes out at the wheel and is thrown through his windshield. Vic gets a call from Corrine, who says Cassidy's teacher advised them to sit as a family with her school counselor. As he hangs up and watches the Decoy Squad streak through the Barn, he gleefully exclaims to Lem "I can't believe Shane and Tavon just missed that!"
