Frank Darabont (born January 28, 1959; age 66) was a director of The Shield.

Biography[]

Darabont was born in a refugee camp in Montbéliard, France. He was the son of Hungarian parents that had fled Budapest during the failed 1956 Hungarian revolution. When he was still a child, his family moved to Los Angeles and he attended Hollywood High School.

He started working as a production assistant on the 1981 low-budget film Hell Night. Then he spent six years working in the art department as a set dresser and in set construction while trying to establish himself as a writer. His first writing credit, although shared, was on the 1987 film Nightmare on Elm Street 3: Dream Warriors.

His breakthrough film came in 1994 when he directed The Shawshank Redemption, based in a short story from Stephen King. A commercial failure at first, the film is now considered one of the greatest films, being on the IMDb's Top 3 for more than a decade. The film ended up with seven Academy Award nominations. He followed up with the equally acclaimed The Green Mile, also based on a King novel. He received four nominations for this film.
