Earl was an elderly man that had a brief relationship with Jeannie Sutton during his youth. At that time, Earl lived at Apartment 16 on 960 Chester Avenue.

Before Season 2[]

In the 1940s, Earl met Jeannie Sutton while she was working at a soda shop. They had a brief relationship during a year and, as a result, Jeannie got pregnant. After giving birth to the child, she and Earl smothered the child to death and buried him in a shallow grave at what was at the time the L.A. County Cemetery.

Season 2[]

When Detectives Dutch Wagenbach and Claudette Wyms found out that Jeannie Sutton had visited Earl's old apartment in 960 Chester Avenue, asking for him, they brought Earl to the Barn for questioning. When they inquired about his relationship to Jeannie, he confirmed that they had a relationship for almost a year back in the 1940s. Earl assured the detectives that he had lost contact with her after they broke up. Claudette and Dutch informed him that Jeannie was suffering from Alzheimer's and was lost, explaining why they had brought him.

After Dutch and Claudette found Jeannie on Echo Park, Dutch went to Earl again and confronted him with evidence he had found indicating that there had been an unidentified baby buried back in the 1940s on the spot where they had found Jeannie. Dutch then told Earl that he knew he and Jeannie had killed the baby after she became pregnant.
